Costume Leopard Head Clip-On Earrings
Channel your inner big cat with these daring clip-on earrings! Wonderfully wild, these captivating ear buttons are rendered in gold-tone metal and feature a three-dimensional roaring leopard (or panther) head almost emerging from the design. The panther motif started appearing in jewels during the Art Deco era, but it was Jeanne Toussaint, former artistic director of Cartier Jewellery and Louis Cartier’s lover, who reintroduced it in the 1940s. Previously, these types of animals were worn mainly by actresses and courtesans, but the liberating new era cast aside social restrictions as women gained freedom of expression. Since then, seductive cats have graced the jewellery of many socialites and high-society members, including the scandalous figures Dutchess of Windsor and Princess Nina Aga Khan. Dated from the 1980s-1990s, these bold clip-on earrings are brimming with symbolism. Just like leopards, women are precious and feminine, but they also have a wild side and can quickly become dangerous! Wear them as a talisman to remind you of your own strength and independence, and enjoy the attention they draw.
